St. Thomas, Apostle
Although people may use the expression “Doubting Thomas” as
a way to remember Thomas’ doubts about Jesus’ resurrection, few may know him as
the dedicated disciple who was willing to lay down his life for the Christ
(John 11:16). Church historian,
Eusebius, mentions Thomas’ mission to the Parthians. The Syrian Christians of India also keep the
tradition that Thomas founded the churches there. Gnostic thinkers of the second century used
Thomas’ name to write a Gospel about an overly spiritual Jesus - a teacher who seems almost entirely above the physical world. This is a bit of historic irony, since Thomas
was the person who wanted to physically touch the risen Christ before accepting
the reality of that first Easter.
