Mary

This painting by El Greco is the angel Gabriel greeting Mary.  Mary’s hand gestures toward herself as if she cannot believe this divine being is addressing her.  We do not know what Mary was doing at the time of the angel’s arrival.  El Greco imagines her kneeling at a home altar in prayer.  Notice how the heavens are opened above her and how the smaller cherubs crowd around to witness this extraordinary event - the coming of God to earth.  It happens through a humble maiden in Nazareth.
