Sermon Notes for September 14

In a seminar, recently, I heard that a sermon should be part of a conversation as opposed to just a presentation of knowledge. I liked that a lot, and I would like to encourage that thinking as we start a new sermon series for September.

The series is based on the word "justice" in the Bible, understanding the broad concept through four different motifs that we will explore each week. Justice is something that applies to how we understand our relationship to God and our relationships to one another, so there is a lot of ground to cover!

I hope we can keep the conversation going after church, on social media or in the adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings at Bethany 9-9:45 a.m. near the kitchen.

Week Two: Living by Faith

The more we learn about "justice" as it is revealed in the Scriptures, the more questions we may have about the world we live in. The prophet Habakkuk had questions that he wrestled with about the injustice, or wickedness, he saw around him. God's answers gave him faith he could live by. In addition to learning more about this prophet, we'll look at the way a just God deals with us and how that gives us hope we can share with a sinful and unjust world.

Start this conversation at Bethany Lutheran Church located at 2501 Beacon Hill Road in Alexandria, Virginia! The adult Bible Class is based on this sermon series, led by Loraine Slattery during the Sunday School and Fellowship Hour (9-9:50 a.m.). Then join us for worship at 10 for part of "Justice Is Just This". I would love to see you in person, but if that is not possible, we stream our services on www.bethany-lcms.org/live-stream

Grace and peace!
