In a seminar, recently, I heard that a sermon should be part of a conversation as opposed to just a presentation of knowledge. I liked that a lot, and I would like to encourage that thinking as we start a new sermon series for September.
The series is based on the word "justice" in the Bible, understanding the broad concept through four different motifs that we will explore each week. Justice is something that applies to how we understand our relationship to God and our relationships to one another, so there is a lot of ground to cover!
I hope we can keep the conversation going after church, on social media or in the adult Bible Class on Sunday mornings at Bethany 9-9:45 a.m. near the kitchen.
WEEK FOUR: Helping The Powerless
Key Scripture: Isaiah 1:16-20, Proverbs 31:8-9, Luke 16:19-30
How the powerful use their power is a matter of great concern to God and He communicates this through the prophets of the Old Testament. But even after judgment was handed down for the abuses of power in Israel and Judah, this aspect of justice is still important for us, today. This is where justice and mercy intersect in our lives. It takes the love of God empowering us to see and have compassion on those who are most vulnerable around us.
Join me for one more sermon in the "Justice Is Just This" series this Sunday at 10. You can hear it at Bethany Lutheran Church and Preschool by attending our service, or watching the live stream.
Grace and peace!
